MAPS

Greater Washington Area  -- This is a map of the "Beltway" to orient us to the location at which we'll be drumming.  Note the indicator for the White House.  This is where we'll be gathering.

HOUSING

Each person attending the event is responsible for her or his own housing. There is a great variety of housing in Washington, D.C.   Here are links to lists of hostels in the area.

It is recommended that you find housing near a metro station.

FOOD

There are a number of restaurants and coffee shops in the area that cater to the tourists. There are vendors in the area of the White House with snack food, ice cream, soda, etc. People are encouraged to bring food for themselves and to share.

Turtle Women Rising will solicit food from organizations and businesses in the area but will need your support to help feed all who come for the drum prayer.

BATHROOMS
Portable bathroom facilities, including disabled access bathrooms, will be on the grounds of the Ellipse.

 

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING

 

Getting to Washington, D.C.

Ride Sharing:  We plan to develop a ride share board to facilitate your trip to Washington, D.C.  You can also use the Yahoo group to connect with others who are coming to this event.  The link to join the Yahoo group is on the Turtle Women Rising main page.

Flying:  You can fly into either Dulles International Airport or the Reagan International Airport.  The Reagan airport has Metro service.  There is a shuttle from Dulles to a Metro stations, which takes about 20 minutes.

Public Transportation in Washington:

The closest Metro stations to the White House are Federal Triangle, Metro Center and McPherson Square. Parking is very limited in this area, so public transportation is recommended.

You can check the Metro web site for locations of stations in the area you plan to stay.  They have a trip planner that helps you plan your route.   Here is a map of the Metro system.  Metro fares are listed here.

 

Parking

There are of course many garages and parking lots in Washington, D.C., though these are very limited in the area where Turtle Women Rising takes place. 

This site lists some parking companies.  Be sure to check that your parking location is near a Metro station

 

Handicapped Parking
The National Park Service has designated 36 free handicapped parking spaces near the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. Here are the locations:
* 7 spaces on Jefferson Drive, in front of the Freer Gallery of Art
* 7 spaces between the carousel and the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden
* 7 spaces in front of the National Air and Space Museum
* 3 spaces on Madison Drive, at the east end of the National Museum of Natural History
* 2 spaces in front of the National Museum of Natural History
* 5 spaces in front of the National Museum of American History
* 5 spaces near the National Gallery of Art, which is not part of the Smithsonian
